Friday, February 27, 2009 - 12:00 PM - Tampa Indie Film Log for Filmmaker C. A. Passinault

A New Tampa Film Review?

I’m about to call it. I’m about to sit down and write the unauthorized review of The Tampa Film Review for 2009, and will include an overall summary of the five year history of a monthly film festival which really didn’t do much but spin its wheels. Ultimately, the TFR didn’t go anywhere or benefit anyone.
Was the TFR a failure? Well, that depends on if it did what it set out to do. To some, the TFR was not a failure because it did what the organizers claimed. That’s not saying much, however. As a film festival, and as a platform for promoting indie film, The Tampa Film Review did fail. Did any filmmakers ever get a distribution deal from showing a film at The Tampa Film Review? Did The Tampa Film Review advance or improve in its five year run? No, and no.
Will there ever be a new Tampa Film Review? If it is set up and executed the same way, let’s hope not. While there are rumors of a new TFR in the pipeline, and if it ever happens it may very well share its name, it won’t really be the TFR, and this is good and bad. So, I’m closing the book on The Tampa Film Review, and am calling it over, even if another film festival starts up with the same name.
Some people will never learn. Here’s hoping that the next, or new, TFR will learn from the mistakes of the original. Here’s hoping that it does better.
Here’s a thought, however. Paul Guzzo once said that his TFR was set up like a bunch of friends getting together to watch films. I kind of like that idea, but it only really works if the films are good films. Otherwise, as the TFR demonstrated, and proved, again and again, you lose your audience by boring them. No one wants to sit through badly made films and attend a poorly organized film festival with no real purpose or point.
The concept is not without merit, however.
For the past few years, I’ve had movie nights with women who I’ve dated and other movie viewing nights with groups of friends. I’ve amassed one of the largest collections of films and movies in the Tampa Bay area, and have seen all of them, so I have no shortage of great movies to watch. Since, currently, there are not a lot Tampa films worth watching, why not have viewing parties with great movies? I’m thinking about having private, small home film festivals where no more than twenty indie film professionals would have dinner and sit around watching indie films from around the world and some of the best movies ever made. Afterwards, we’d sit around discussing the film and the filmmaking techniques employed in the film. These movie nights would be exclusive, and invite-only, and I would have talent, such as models and actors, attend as well. I believe by studying, and discussing, good movies, that we will all benefit in our filmmaking careers, as well as have fun hanging out for a night of dining and movies.
The legendary director Stanley Kubrick was an avid movie buff who would watch movies constantly, studying them. I believe this contributed to making him a great director. After all, we do best when we really know our craft and constantly study the successful efforts of others. For me, this will be the new Tampa Film Review, and the old one could never touch what is to come, and the benefits which will come from what we will be doing.
My movie nights won’t be official film festivals, of course, but will be really cool, and really fun. In the past, I spent nights curled up on the couch with a model watching movies together or getting with a group of friends to watch movies. This will be a bit more interesting, as we will be objectively reviewing and discussing the movies that we see. The dining and the fun will be cool, too. So, what would my first picks for movies be? Let’s see...... I have a lot of rare movies which are hard to find in stores, and are great films:

01. Pumpkin
02. American Beauty
03. The World’s Fastest Indian
04. A Walk To Remember
05. Tucker: A Man And His Dream
06. The Aviator
07. Some Kind Of Wonderful
08. Down With Love
09. The Last Castle
10. Peggy Sue Got Married
11. Crank
12. Cellular
13. Flight Of The Phoenix
14. Duma
15. Cool World
16. Matchstick Men
17. Only You
18. Made Of Honor
19. Stick It
20. The Final Countdown
21. Risky Business
22. The Girl Next Door
23. Just Friends
24. The Sure Thing
25. Jumper
26. Hard Candy
27. Head Over Heels
28. Lord Of War
29. Rambo
30. Son Of Rambow

There are more, however, but I mainly listed ones which aren’t as well known as most movies. It’s unlikely that many have seen most of them.
Oh, and I will having at least one viewing party toward the end of this year with some models, actors, and filmmakers. That viewing party will be for the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival, and will be used for the official 2009 review of the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival. I may even have gathering for video games, since I have the largest video game collection in Florida (to my knowledge), but that has nothing to do with films, so I won’t go into more detail here.
Expect me to cover the movie nights and other film-relevant get-togethers here and on Tampa Bay Film, with full write-ups including photographs and video. The coverage will be for those who are on the outside looking in and wishing that they could have been there. Who’s that actress, and who’s that model? They’ll only know you if you were there, or only if I were to make an introduction and refer them to you.
As I told someone recently at a film set, I have more to offer some people in the Tampa film scene than they have to offer me. That’s why I don’t have to play politics, and freely speak my mind. They need me a lot more than I need them.
Oh, and before I go, here’s another update: Tampa Bay Film will see a large update as early as Monday. The advanced Tampa film scam analysis database will be operational and will launch, the site layout will be updated, and my latest interview where I give my take on Tampa indie film will be posted. It’s going to be good!
