OBSERVATIONS 01/01/11 - A post seen on the Facebook profile of the Tampa Film Commission by Miami film commissioner Graham Winick, in response to an announcement of a film festival by Creative Loafing:
“Creative Loafing needs to take responsibility for their yellow journalist (We think that he meant to write "journalistic" - ED) attacks on the Tampa and St Pete Film Commissions before the creative community assists them in any way, imo.”

Tampa Bay Film Editor C. A. Passinault responds:
When I first saw this, I did not know who Mr. Winick was, as he did not identify himself, and he came off as a filmmaker. I wondered why a filmmaker would express such an opinion, so I looked him up. When I found out who he was, I understood why he posted what he did. I just wish that people would explain who they are when they post so we can consider the source, and the motivation behind their post.
I do not consider criticism to be a “yellow attack”, especially when valid points are brought up. In my opinion, this man has no business rallying the “creative community” to boycott anyone over a freedom of the press issue that he has issues with, especially when he is not a part of that creative community. For that matter, the Tampa film commission is not a part of the creative community, either. In my opinion, creative loafing DID take responsibility when they published under their name. It’s not like they did it anonymously. We need more publications to take a stand, and to tell it how it is. A film commissioner calling a publication a coward just because he can’t handle negative press is pathetic. The film commissions and the creative community are the not same, so this is not our fight.
With what I will be publishing on the Tampa Bay Film sites in 2011, I’m sure that people like this will try to get others to boycott me, too. Good luck!

Another post from Graham Winick:
“Unfortunately, it is my understanding the Tampa Bay Film Commission will be shut down at the end of the year because it is not considered a viable industry to attract....”

If this is true, this could be the best news of 2010 for Tampa indie film! Seriously, all that I wanted for Christmas in 2010 was for the Tampa film commission to lose their funding, and shut down. What have they done for Tampa filmmakers, and why do they deserve our help? In my opinion, the Tampa film commission shutting down would be good for indie filmmaking here in Tampa. I’d much rather go to the tax collectors office and pay for a permit than deal with the film comission.
Please, Mr. Winick, feel free to debate with me here on the Tampa Film Blog..... and that goes for anyone else who disagrees with my opinions. I’m right here!
