Respect
For Tampa Indie Film
I’m at the point right
now that I have to focus my efforts into my photography career, and when
my objectives there are met, on to my event planning / DJ’ing career.
Tampa indie film will have to wait.
I’ll still update my indie film sites when I get the chance, and
am even buying some more this year, but my time and budget will not allow
me to take to the streets and attend Tampa film festivals, as well as
Tampa indie film sets. I have other things to do right now.
I don’t know when I will be able to return to aggressively covering
Tampa indie film, but I’m guessing late spring of 2010. As of now,
the January 2011 debut of the Tampa Film Showcase monthly film festival
and professional networking event series is still on schedule, but there
is no guarantee of that. Also, I would like to do a Halloween / Horror
Tampa film festival in the fall of 2010, but I can’t make any promises
right now. It all depends upon progress the rest of this year.
I will go on record to say that Tampa indie film is important to me, and
remains a top priority, although such endeavors fall into the investment
category and not the profit-making business category.
I do intend to lead the Tampa indie film scene in the future, and plan
on it. There is just going to be a wait.
So, what’s left? A few underground film festivals are still in the
works, and a few Tampa film festival reviews will be published on Tampa
Bay Film in the next few weeks. Likewise, Tampa Bay Film, the online film
festival, and the Tampa Film Blog will be updated, but the updates will
be much less frequent than they have been. It’s going to be very
slow around here for a long time.
Of course, I’m also launching a few more Tampa indie film sites
in the next few weeks, but after they launch, they will also be slowly
updated; future investments to be taken advantage of in the near future.
So, no Gasparilla film festival next year (no big loss there, as I doubt
that it would have been worth attending to begin with), and no other big
Tampa film festivals.
Hmmm, whatever shall I do? Concentrate on making money with my business
and investing in resources. I will also spend some time early next year
making several short films, and it may be late next year before I will
write anything about those projects.
Instead of writing about what I am planning, I’ll probably stick
to writing about things that are about to happen or have already happened.
This is going to drive my stalkers.... erm, I mean, the people who monitor
my web sites and everything that I do, crazy.
So, things are about to go quiet. Have something significant to post here,
and I will consider it. Just don’t hold your breath on lots of updates
here anytime this year.
Which brings us to the subject at hand. Ahem........
Do I respect Tampa indie film?
Honestly, not really. There are a few Tampa indie films and Tampa indie
filmmakers whom I respect, and like, but they are only a few of many.
I respect Andy Lalino, Chris Woods, and others who I have listed on the
“It List”. I even respect Lisa, who is a good writer, and
obviously has a passion for what she does.
That’s it, however. The Tampa indie film scene is weak. Most of
the players are aspiring filmmakers who will never make it in the industry,
and many of them have false, self-serving motives. At this time, I feel
that covering and working with the current film scene is a huge waste
of time and effort. I’m going to re-prioritize my work. It’s
best to let the dust settle, build up resources, network with the few
who are worth working with, and storm the market in the future.
I’m signing out for now. I'll be back. See you in the future.
