TAMPA FILM BLOG Where Tampa filmmakers unite. News. Opinions. Knowledge. Power. PREVIOUS BLOG POST - BLOG POSTS - AUTHOR - POST TO BLOG - NEXT BLOG POST Saturday, July 25, 2009 - 9:00 AM - Tampa Indie Film Log for Filmmaker C. A. Passinault Updates, The Tampa Bay Film Review, And A Tip For Buying Indie Films The Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival was adjusted yesterday, with a full diagnostic executed on the indie film database. The online film festival has been updated, and more films were added this morning. Archived films such as the Lonelygirl15 series will be added to the active playlist. Check the Online Film Festival Blog (our online film festival blog, which is separate from the Tampa Film Blog and focuses on the online film festival) for details. Additionally, it became official today on Tampa Bay Film that the main underground film festival for Tampa Bay Film would be the new Tampa Bay Film Review. This private, small, ongoing underground film festival series will gather a group of entertainment industry professionals to watch, and review, both short and feature-length indie films. Any filmmakers wishing to submit their films for review can send a DVD copy of their film, and their press kit, to P.O. Box 1224, Riverview FL, 33568-1224. Submissions are free, for now, and the Tampa Bay Film Review will begin regular underground film festival events in the fall (the events will be private, invitation-only, and are not open to the public. The events will be held at varied, secret locations- hence the term underground; each event and the reviews will be covered, and published, on Tampa Bay Film). See the Tampa Bay Film site for more. Although the Tampa Bay Film Review will be the main underground film festival for Tampa Bay Film, it will be one of many. There will be many other underground film festivals, the Halloween Horror Picture Show 2009 (pending) and A Film Festival In A Car among the examples. Remember, underground film festivals are just that. Underground. Although they do not have to be private functions, they are usually smaller, more mobile, and require very little to function. Underground film festivals will often serve as a protest of the more conventional film festivals, and they are the bare essences of what a film festival is all about. Get a group of friends together with some indie film DVD's, a portable DVD player or a home theater system, and a plan/ theme/ agenda, and you have all that you need for an underground film festival. Of course, you'll have to document it, too, and keep records, or otherwise no one will ever know that it happened but those involved, and what good is that? Many underground film festivals are private affairs where people can read about it or watch it after the fact, with very little public participation while it actually happens. Also, underground film festivals are my idea, too, and I can hear it now: "That Passinault guy is promoting these weird, tiny film festivals that no one can attend! His Tampa Bay Film Review underground film festival advertises that you're not invited! He's crazy!". Well, I disagree. There is a purpose for them, and it's almost viral. Underground film festivals will prove to be controversial and effective, undermining the politics and the authority of the larger, more conventional film festivals. They will serve a a good appetizer for my big film festival events, as well as serve as our "street team" of guerrilla marketers once my big film festivals are running. That's right, my big film festival properties will be designed to incorporate the benefits of the support of my underground film festivals, and the underground film festivals will feed into them. Then we have our indie film selection process. Since the Tampa Bay Film Review will be interested in reviewing certain films which the filmmakers will refuse to submit for assorted reasons, we'll request them. If the request is refused, we will go to an online store, and will buy a used copy of the film. Any resulting reviews of the film will also indicate whether the film was freely submitted by the filmmaker, or if the filmmaker refused to submit the film for whatever reason. If we have to buy some films, we will do it cheap, and buying them used will assure that the filmmaker will not make a dime from our purchase. TIP OF YOUR CAREER: This tip comes from the merry world of retail; in Japan, for example, the used video game market is outlawed because it cuts into the profits of the publisher, and the used product competes with the new product sold by the publisher. Often, the used product is just as good as the new product, and because it is less expensive is outsells the new product. The publisher does not make any money from the sale of used product sold by others, and only make a profit from new product sold by them. The same applies to films, DVD's, and movie releases. If the indie film is good, and you wish to respect the filmmaker, by all means express your respect and help their sales by buying a new DVD copy of the film through their online store. If you want to see an indie film, and do NOT want them to make a sale or profit from your purchase (from lack of respect for the filmmaker or on principle), buy it used. Some poor soul out there with a copy of the film will make some of their money back, and the filmmaker will not make a dime. Please do not support bad films by helping those filmmakers make money. I will buy new DVD's from the filmmaker if I respect them and want to support them. If the filmmaker is unprofessional and/or unethical, or their films just suck (and I still want to see if for some reason), I'll buy it used to save me money and to make sure that I deny them a sale and profit. If it isn't available used for whatever reason, such as the film is so bad that there are no used copies, I'll either wait for a used copy to become available, or I will obtain it through other means.
