TAMPA FILM BLOG Where Tampa filmmakers unite. News. Opinions. Knowledge. Power. PREVIOUS BLOG POST - BLOG POSTS - AUTHOR - POST TO BLOG - NEXT BLOG POST Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - 7:47 PM - Tampa Indie Film Log for Filmmaker C. A. Passinault Is The Halloween Horror Picture Show Finished? (Sigh)..... I did some checks on Tampa indie film today using an array of search engines, and noticed that The Halloween Horror Picture Show web site was offline. At first, I thought that Rick had allowed the domain name to lapse, and that evil cybersquatters has come in and taken it, to hold it for ransom (I've had this done to me at least twice, and the cybersquatters regretted it). A quick check revealed that he still had the domain name, and that he still had it until October 2010, so all is not lost- the film festival can be saved (Yes, it CAN BE SAVED!). At any rate, there was an adjustment done to the domain name a few days ago on July 13, so I'm speculating that Rick took the site offline at that time. With historical knowledge of the lead time required to do the film festival, and the fact that the site is currently offline, it is beginning to look like the Halloween Horror Picture Show film festival will not happen this year. Since the film festival has not missed a year, this has me concerned. I noticed that Rick allowed the Gasparilla International Film Festival to brand-over The Halloween Horror Picture Show 2008, and realized that this wasn't a good sign. Anyone who would have attended the 2008 Halloween Horror Picture Show would have thought that it was a Gasparilla Film Festival event, because Gasparilla branding was everywhere and the Halloween Horror Picture Show branding was nowhere to be found. Sad, so sad. Rick, I'm asking you to not give up. Do not abandon the Halloween Horror Picture Show. Reboot it as a smaller event like The Ladies Of The Night film festival if you have to. Make it a smaller, more intimate, film festival. Make some improvements. Get with Rodrick and move it back to USF. Do something! Don't let this film festival property fade away. It has too much promise and potential. Although I don't have a lot of time to spare this year, let me know if you need any help, and I'll see what I can do. I'm beginning to wonder if the economy is killing film festivals and indie films. Well, things will bounce back and improve. If the Halloween Horror Picture Show is lost, I may have a similar film festival in the works for the fall of 2010. I've already talked to Andy Lalino about this film festival property, so he knows some of the details. I'll have to work on some things now to prepare for the film festival next year, however. The future is looking good! Oh, well. I suppose the lesson here is to not take Tampa film festivals for granted. Attend them, support them, and enjoy them while they are here. Hell, for all of its shortcomings, I'm even beginning to miss The Tampa Film Review. For now, I need to go and update the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival, which is online and doing great!
