Z3D5 CAMERA WORK REVEALED

Anyone wondering just how they got the look of the film Z3D5? I did. So, just like I did with the producers of Dirty Bomb Diaries, which is also playing on the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival, I went straight to the source and asked Australian filmmaker Daniel Armstrong of Strong Man Pictures the question:

What kind of camera was used by your D.P.? TheThe footage of this film is excellent. Can any Tampa D.P. match this? They should be able to!
footage is excellent, and many people in the Tampa indie film scene are
wondering about your choice of camera, and how the film was shot.
Great work!
Sincerely,
Tampa Bay Film

Hiya Tampa Bay Film,

Many thank yous for the positive comments! It's very gratifying and
humbling and we greatly appreciate it!

As for our choice of camera, we shot on a Digi-Beta camera we were
lucky enough to have access to that week. It was a Sony F750. As for
how we shot it - we were handheld for the majority of the time, and
decided that we would utilise a lot of "long lens" focus pulls to get
that heat hazey/sunburned vibe. We also hade a home made pipe dolly on
hand for a couple of shots.

The D.P was definitely aiming for a very stylised collection of shots.
We shot slightly over-exposed in natural light with the intention of
pegging it back in post - having a raw image that was just a little
too "hot" gave us somewhere to go with colour adjustment and gamma
adjustment in the edit to help create the post apocalyptic look we
wanted.

We pulled a lot of the blue spectrum out of the image in post as well,
to create the yellow highlights. Just straight forward RGB
adjustments, no fancy filters.

I should probably mention that the sound design is in my opinion the
most important aspect of any film when it comes to making it have an
impact or stand out. Awsome sound makes footage look better. Try
Watchmen with no sound and suddenly it doesn't look nearly as cool. I
think that the sound is one of the keys to the "look" of Z3D5, we
spent much more time doing sound than actually shooting.

Thanks for supporting our film - let me know if anything I just said
was of interest!

Cheers
Daniel.

Good stuff. I'm thinking of doing more of this, as far as asking the filmmakers how they did their work, in order to benefit Tampa filmmakers. I may just use the Tampa Film Blog for behind the scenes stuff and these Q&A's.
If you haven't seen Z3D5 yet, you need to. It's a great film. Click on the picture to watch the film on the Tampa Bay Film Online Film Festival.
Well, I have to run. I'm going to be working on a project for the next two days, and then I have another project to do the day after that.
